I was a late in life college student, starting at age 37. I had struggled with drug addiction for years and finally had to make a life change or die. I also had a significant eating disorder. I was married with 2 children, so death wasn't an option. I chose one morning to flush all of the prescription drugs. Recovery was difficult, but at one meeting I heard a woman say she had been working her program for 17 years and was struggling with step 3.
